Antisemitism is racism

Prejudice against Jewish people is one of the oldest forms of hate, so pervasive it has its own name: antisemitism. At its core, antisemitism is simply a form of racism.

One of the most common questions we hear at the Sydney Jewish Museum is “Why do people hate the Jews?”

It is a question for which there are, unfortunately, no simple answers. It’s as difficult for us to answer as the question of why people are racist, misogynistic or homophobic. Sometimes by answering this question, we fall into the trap of justifying that these forms of hatred exist at all.

So, let’s start at the beginning, and answer these three important questions to help you to get closer to the why…

WHAT is the hatred of the Jews?

HOW has it shown up in history, and today?

WHAT can you do to stop it?

Our team of Educators, Academics and Historians at the Museum, have brought together a comprehensive, easy-to-read history and explanation of the 3,000-year history of Jewish hate, often referred to as antisemitism. They have also found some incredible books, podcasts, online resources and tips for learning and doing more. We hope that having this as a resource, you will feel equipped and empowered to notice, question and stand up to hate when you see or hear it.

In fact, we hope you will share this resource with your friends and family, too.
